The religious authorities of Islam have frequently engaged in dialogues and debates with followers of other faiths. Among the Imams, Imam al-Ridha is notably recognized for his numerous interfaith debates. One of his significant discussions took place with the High Priest of the Zoroastrians (Hirbad al-A‘zam). From the statements made by Imam al-Ridha, three rational arguments can be extracted for the historical analysis of Zoroaster’s prophethood. It must be emphasized that historical rejection or skepticism does not equate to an absolute denial of reality, nor does it imply a rejection of the Zoroastrian tradition itself; the religion of Zoroastrianism can still be regarded as a People of the Book tradition.<br>The central question of this study is whether Zoroaster’s prophethood can be historically and extra-theologically established based on his debate with the Zoroastrian High Priest. This claim is evaluated through reference to authentic Zoroastrian sources. Furthermore, since some Zoroastrians claim the Gāthās (the section of the Avesta attributed to Zoroaster) to be miraculous, this assertion is also critically examined using authoritative Zoroastrian texts. The study concludes that Zoroaster’s prophethood cannot be substantiated on historical grounds.
