Many Zoroastrian mobeds (priests) regard the Gāthās—a collection of seventeen hymns—as authentically attributed to Zarathustra himself. Most contemporary Zoroastrians consider the Gāthās to be sacred texts and recite them in various religious rituals. The vocabulary employed in these hymns exhibits linguistic parallels with the oldest Brahmanical (Vedic) scriptures, indicating a shared origin with the ancient Indian religious canon. In recent times, certain mobeds have endeavored to introduce substantial interpretive shifts in the translation of the Gāthās in an attempt to present them within a moralistic framework. However, rigorous scholarly analysis reveals that these hymns, traditionally ascribed to Zarathustra, are grounded in invocations directed toward multiple deities, involving praise, supplication, worship, and sacrificial offerings. The worldview embedded in the Gāthās is fundamentally polytheistic and astral in nature, reaching its zenith in the veneration of the exalted deities of the ancient Indo-Aryan pantheon. One cannot overlook the influence of Mesopotamian civilization—long regarded as the epicenter of astral worship throughout early historical millennia—which transmitted its polytheistic and star-worshiping elements to neighboring cultures, including ancient Egyptian, Greek, and particularly Indo-Aryan civilizations. This article adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, critically assessing the emergence of polytheism within Zarathustra’s hymns and ultimately offering arguments against the prophetic status traditionally attributed to Zarathustra.
