In the past, persons with disabilities, beyond the inherent hardships they endured, were often subjected to superstitions that attributed their illnesses and impairments to supernatural forces. Depending on prevailing beliefs, they were at times tortured under the guise of treatment, and in some communities, even executed.
In ancient Iran, the origin of disease and disability was ascribed to Ahriman, the evil spirit, which significantly shaped societal attitudes toward individuals with physical and mental impairments. This study aims to examine the role of Ahriman as the creator of illness and imperfection, and how this attribution contributed to the degradation of the social status of the disabled in ancient Iranian society. It seeks to answer how belief in Ahriman as the source of disease and deficiency influenced social perceptions of disability and what forms of marginalization and exclusion it engendered.
This research is conducted using a descriptive-analytical method and is based on a thorough review of library sources.
According to the findings, disability was regarded as a demonic stain, and mythologically, those afflicted were often denied the right to life. Such a perception had severe consequences for the disabled and manifested in Zoroastrian jurisprudence and rituals. Under this worldview, persons with disabilities were prohibited from participating in certain religious ceremonies. Strict ritual purity laws barred them from attaining roles such as priesthood or kingship and posed serious challenges to their acceptance within Zoroastrian society.
